General contractor in Keyport, WA

Keyport is a small waterfront village on Liberty Bay, permitted through Kitsap County. Here is how building works there and which projects suit it.

About Keyport

Keyport is a small unincorporated community on the Keyport peninsula, which juts into Liberty Bay a few miles southeast of Poulsbo. It sits at the eastern end of State Route 308 and is known for its Navy torpedo repair depot and the Naval Undersea Museum, and for a port-run boat dock. The town's nickname is "Torpedo Town USA."

It is a compact place: small lots in the village, houses along the shore, and rural parcels a short way inland.

Building in Keyport

Small lots and older houses are common here. Additions and remodels have to respect setbacks that are tight on a small lot, and older foundations and framing may need reinforcement before something new is tied to them. Houses built before 1978 may contain lead paint, and older flooring and pipe wrap may contain asbestos, so we test before demolition.

The shoreline matters. Lots near Liberty Bay bring shoreline rules and bluff or slope questions into projects that look simple from the street, and saltwater exposure is hard on siding, decks and trim, so flashing and finish choices matter. Most homes are on septic and wells or small water systems, so Kitsap Public Health District review applies to projects that add bedrooms or a plumbed building.

Keyport is close to Poulsbo, so crews and materials are a short trip away, which keeps small projects efficient. Decks, bathrooms and exterior upgrades are the projects that make the most sense here, along with careful additions.

Permits in Keyport

Keyport is unincorporated, so Kitsap County's Department of Community Development issues permits here, not the City of Poulsbo. Our Kitsap County permit guide is the place to start, and it links to the county's own pages. If your address is near the Poulsbo line, confirm which authority covers it before you plan.

Where to start in Keyport

Because Keyport sits close to Poulsbo, a site visit is a short trip for us. Bring any survey, the septic records and the date the house was built. They tell us whether we are dealing with lead paint, an old foundation or a tight setback before we price anything.
